Sunday Reflection: The Cup

“My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” Matthew 26:42

The cup is laid before Him,
The cup of woe,
The cup of anguish.

He begs not to drink it,
Not to taste its death;
Maybe there’s another way.

“Father, please let it pass,
If it’s possible,
I am exceedingly sorrowful.”

But sorrow doesn’t change,
What has to be done,
The cup must be drunk.

“If this cup cannot pass,
Not My will but Thine.”
And the cup was consumed.

Prayer:
Jesus, Your Son, was deeply distressed and begged You to take away the cup of woe. My God, how difficult it must have been for You to see His anquish, to hear His cries, knowing that You had the power to take it away but You couldn’t — not if You were to redeem the people You had created in Your image. What a glorious Son You have that although He was exceedingly sorrowful, He was so willing to do Your will and drink the cup set before Him if it was the only way. And He did drink, and now I am blessed to drink in His supper today in rememberance of His love and loyalty not only for You but for a pitiful sinner like me. Praise Jesus who so deservingly reigns at Your right hand forever and ever! Amen!

Truth in love,
Heather
